First Responder

Lifesaving skills in the first responder course include recognizing unsafe scenarios and
hazardous materials emergencies, protection from blood borne pathogens, controlling
bleeding, applying splints, conducting a primary life-saving patient assessment, in-line
spinal stabilization and transport, and calling for more advanced medical help. First
Responders can serve as secondary providers with some volunteer EMS services. A
certified first responder can be seen either as an advanced first aid provider, or as a
limited provider of emergency medical care when more advanced providers are not yet
on scene or available.
This course is intended for, but is not limited to, law enforcement personnel,
firefighters, rescue personnel, ski patrol members, coaches, school nurses, camp
nurses, special event coverage personnel, industrial emergency team members, and
other individuals charged with “first response” duties.
Course includes:
-Scene Safety.
-Trauma Patient Assessment/Management
-Bleeding Control/Shock Management
-Medical Emergencies
-Patient Assessment
-Upper Airway Adjuncts and Suction
-Mouth-to-Mask Ventilation
-One and Two Rescuer CPR
-CPR for Adults, Children, and Infants
-AED
-Unresponsive Adult Obstructed Airway
This class is approximately 40 hours long. Upon completion each student will receive a
2 year First responder certification from the American Safety & Health Institute.
